Why the Cat Across the Street Cannot Be Trusted

A detailed intelligence briefing on the orange tabby at 14 Maple. The evidence is circumstantial. The conclusion is not.

I have been monitoring the situation across the street for approximately fourteen months. I want to be clear that I am not acting on instinct here. Instinct would have me barking immediately and without nuance. What I am doing is analysis. Careful, sustained, evidence-based analysis of a subject who has given me every reason for concern and zero reasons for reassurance.

The cat's name, I am told, is Biscuit. I find this name suspicious. It is a disarming name. It is a name designed to make you lower your guard. Nobody names a threat 'Biscuit.' That is exactly what someone who is a threat would do.

Biscuit sits in the window and watches. Not the way I watch — openly, with declared intent. Biscuit watches sideways. Biscuit watches while pretending not to watch. This is called surveillance.

The evidence file is substantial. Item one: Biscuit has never once acknowledged my presence with a direct look. Every time I pass, Biscuit looks away. This is not indifference. Indifference is a neutral state. This is a performance of indifference, which is a very different thing and considerably more alarming.

Item two: Biscuit was seen on my side of the street on the morning of March 14th. There is no legitimate reason for Biscuit to be on my side of the street. The street is a clear boundary. Biscuit knows this. Biscuit crossed it anyway. I barked. My owner said 'it's just a cat.' My owner does not have the full picture.

My Assessment

I am not saying Biscuit is dangerous in the conventional sense. I am saying Biscuit is operating according to an agenda I do not fully understand, and in my experience, things operating according to agendas you do not understand are worth watching. I am watching. I will continue to watch.

If Biscuit crosses the street again, I will have more to report. I am keeping this file open.
