An Open Letter to the Squirrels Next Door

Diplomatic relations have broken down. Jax outlines his position, his demands, and his willingness to negotiate — conditionally.

To the squirrels currently occupying the oak tree at the northeast corner of the yard:

I am writing this in good faith. I want you to know that. I have consulted no one. I have no legal representation. I am a dog acting alone, in the interest of peace, because the current situation is unsustainable and I think we both know it.

You have been running along the fence line at exactly the speed required to make pursuit feel possible but success feel impossible. This is psychological warfare and I will not pretend otherwise.

Let me be direct about the grievances. First: the acorns. You are burying them in my yard. My yard. The yard where I have established clear territorial sovereignty through years of consistent perimeter marking. The acorns are not welcome. They are a provocation.

Second: the chattering. You know what you are doing when you chatter from the fence while I am trying to nap on the porch. You know exactly what you are doing. I am asking you to stop.

My Proposed Terms

I am prepared to offer the following: a 36-inch buffer zone along the fence line, during which I will not give chase. In exchange, you will cease the acorn burial operations and limit fence-running to the hours of 2pm to 4pm, when I am typically napping and will not notice.

I believe this is fair. I believe this is more than fair. I am offering you something I have never offered any squirrel: the benefit of the doubt.

The ball is in your court. Or rather, the acorn is in your tree. I await your response. I will be on the porch.
