All Politicians Are Crooks!

A dog's unflinching take on the political class. They steal your treats, they ignore your barks, and they always look guilty when you catch them. Jax has the receipts.

I have been watching politicians for several years now. I watch them on the television. I watch them in the yard when my owner leaves the news on. I watch them the way I watch the mailman — with sustained, professional suspicion and a very clear sense that something is being taken from me.

My conclusion, after years of careful observation: they are all crooks. Not some of them. Not the ones from the other party. All of them. Every single one. I am not being cynical. I am being a dog, which means I am being honest, because dogs do not have the capacity for the kind of elaborate self-deception required to look at modern politics and say 'yes, this is fine.'

A crook is someone who takes what isn't theirs and then explains, at length, why it actually was.

I know what a crook looks like. I have been accused of stealing food off the counter on multiple occasions. The difference between me and a politician is that when I take the sandwich, I eat it immediately and do not hold a press conference about how the sandwich was actually a burden on the household and I was doing everyone a favor by removing it.

The Evidence

They campaign on one thing and do another. They write laws they do not follow. They leave office significantly wealthier than they arrived, which is a trick I have never been able to pull off despite years of trying. They look you in the eye and say words that mean nothing, and then they look surprised when you stop believing the words.

I do not look surprised when I am caught. I look guilty, because I am guilty, because I took the sandwich. This is called accountability and it is apparently very rare in Washington.

What Should Be Done

I am not going to tell you who to vote for. I am a dog. I cannot vote. I have opinions about the squirrel situation that I believe are more pressing than most ballot measures, and I cannot even get those addressed.

What I will say is this: stop being surprised. The surprise is the part that gets you. They are crooks. They have always been crooks. The system was built by crooks, for crooks, with occasional interruptions by people who meant well and were eventually worn down or voted out. Knowing this does not fix it. But it does mean you can stop wasting energy on shock and start spending it on something useful. Like watching the yard. Like knowing where the squirrels are at all times. Vigilance. That is all I am asking for.
