On the Matter of the Vacuum Cleaner

It is loud. It moves unpredictably. It consumes things from the floor without explanation. Jax has filed a formal objection.

I want to address the vacuum cleaner. I have been putting this off because I do not like to give it the attention it clearly wants, but the situation has escalated and I feel a public record is warranted.

The vacuum cleaner comes out on Saturdays. I know this. I have known this for years. The knowledge does not help. Every Saturday, without fail, I am in the middle of something — resting, monitoring the yard, conducting a routine olfactory survey of the living room floor — and then it starts. The noise. The movement. The complete disregard for the established order of the household.

It does not bark. It does not growl. It simply moves toward you, relentlessly, making a sound that suggests it has opinions about your presence on the floor.

I have tried several approaches. Barking at it: ineffective. It does not respond to barking. It does not respond to anything. It has no face. This is the most unsettling part. Every other thing I have ever confronted has had a face. The vacuum cleaner is a threat with no face and no negotiating position and no apparent goal beyond the consumption of whatever is on the floor, which includes, on occasion, things I was saving.

My current strategy is tactical withdrawal to the bedroom, where I wait on the bed until the noise stops and the household returns to its correct configuration. This is not a retreat. This is a strategic repositioning. I want to be clear about that.

The vacuum cleaner will not win. It wins every Saturday, technically, in the sense that it completes its objective and I spend forty minutes on the bed. But it does not win in any meaningful sense. I am still here. I will be here next Saturday. I will be here the Saturday after that. The vacuum cleaner does not understand persistence. I do.
