Dogs and Democracy: A Natural Alliance

Dogs are loyal, honest, and deeply invested in the wellbeing of their community. Democracy needs exactly these qualities. Jax makes the case.

I cannot vote. I want to be upfront about this. I have opinions about the ballot — strong opinions, carefully considered, based on years of political observation — and I cannot cast one. This is a flaw in the system that I have raised before and will continue to raise until someone with the appropriate authority addresses it.

But I want to make a broader argument today. Not about my specific disenfranchisement, though that remains an issue, but about the natural alignment between dogs and democratic values. I believe dogs are, by temperament and philosophy, the most democratic animals on the planet. I believe this is underappreciated. I am here to appreciate it.

A dog does not care about your income, your status, or your political affiliation. A dog cares whether you are kind, whether you are present, and whether you have treats. These are, I would argue, the correct criteria.

Democracy, at its best, is a system that says every person's voice matters regardless of who they are. Dogs operate on exactly this principle. I have greeted billionaires and I have greeted people who sleep outside and I have given both the same full-body welcome, because the greeting is not a judgment. The greeting is a recognition. You are here. I see you. That matters.

What Dogs Understand About Governance

Dogs understand that the pack works better when everyone has a role. Dogs understand that loyalty is not the same as blind obedience — a good dog will alert you to danger even when you would prefer not to be alerted. Dogs understand that the health of the group depends on the health of each member, which is why a dog will notice when something is wrong with you before you notice it yourself.

These are not small things. These are the foundational values of a functioning civic society. I did not invent them. I simply live them, every day, without a press release or a campaign ad or a debate performance. Just the values, applied consistently, in the yard and on the walk and in the house where I have chosen to make my life.

Give dogs the vote. I am serious. Think about it. We would not waste it.
