The Mailman Problem: An Ongoing Investigation

He comes every day. He leaves every day. Jax has been barking for years and the man keeps coming back. Something is not adding up.

I want to talk about the mailman. I have been wanting to talk about the mailman for a long time. I have been processing this situation for years and I think I finally have enough perspective to address it publicly without letting my feelings get in the way of the analysis.

Every day, at approximately the same time, a man in a uniform approaches my house. He comes to the door. He puts things through the slot. He leaves. I bark. He does not respond to the bark. He does not acknowledge the bark. He simply completes his approach, deposits his materials, and retreats.

Here is the part that has occupied my thinking for three years: he always leaves. Every single time, after I bark, he leaves. By any reasonable interpretation, the barking is working.

And yet he comes back the next day. This is the problem. If the barking is working — if my intervention is successfully repelling the incursion — why does the incursion recur? Either the barking is not working and I am operating under a false model of causality, or the mailman is extraordinarily persistent and my deterrence is only temporary. Neither option is fully satisfying.

The Competing Theories

Theory one: the barking works, but the mailman has no memory of the previous day's barking and therefore does not update his behavior. This would make him a very unusual kind of threat — one that cannot learn from negative feedback. I find this unsettling.

Theory two: the mailman is not a threat at all, and the things he puts through the slot are not hostile materials but some kind of routine exchange that my owner has arranged and considers normal. My owner does seem unsurprised by the mailman. My owner has never once come to the door to assist with the barking. This is either evidence for theory two or evidence that my owner has been compromised.

I am keeping both theories active. The investigation is ongoing. I will report further developments as they occur, which will be tomorrow, at approximately the same time, when he comes back.
